Summer Down Now

So I meant to post the Bon Iver video I took from the show the other night but I was having some trouble uploading them but I will try again later today. It is the end of August and it is crazy to think we will be in September in just a few days so I thought I would post a few tracks from one of my favorite summer albums The French Kicks "Swimming" and the new Streets track " The Escapist" for your aural pleasure.

My Eye Be Drooping

Posted by Matthew in ,

Literally, my eyes are so sleepy. I am a sleepy log right now yet I debate going to work out later. I woke up at 6 this morning so I could get to work early and do some shit that I never got to because I was attacked by some bad Dim Sum. Yes it was delicious going down and yes it was crazy cheap ( 4 pork buns for $3.00 and 4 fried shrimp dumpling $2.50!!!) but like all things; it was just too good to be true.

A couple hours roll around and what do you know, my chest tightens, hives start forming on my face and my right starts to shut. Attractive. I was light headed and my vision a bit bad but I got home safe and sound. I popped some benadreeezy and was knocked out for the night.

Anyways this story has nothing to do with anything but I just wanted to write something before I posted a note that was left on my friends car last night. It is simply amazing. This is what makes humans the greatness species on Earth. The anger inside the person who wrote this is astounding. I am glad he didn't steal anything. Or dump on the seat. That would have been bad.

Oh here is a remix of Justice's hit D.A.N.C.E that I have been listening to lately.....And I know there are a ton of remixes out there but I chose this because Wale is a rapper I tend to enjoy. Good flow and some pretty intelligent/clever lyrics. Enjoy..

So in honor of me finagling some tickets to the sold out Bon Iver show on Tuesday at the Troubadour I want to post my favorite live performance of the band. This is from the website The Blogotheque that has these amazing live performances of some of the best indie music acts . Please enjoy your Sunday. It's quite nice out today.

Monae Monday

So sometimes we have musical acts come through and play at work. It breaks up the day nicely and there is usually pizza and beer. It's nice and who doesn't like free booze? Today a woman named Janelle Monae came to play. I had only read a small write up about her playing some festival in Norway a week before and found it a nice coincidence she was coming to play.

I almost missed it but realized that two of my favorite co-workers were missing and I decided to track them down. I found them already out on the patio waiting for the show to start.

Her band came out first, dressed kind of like Outkast doing a Hives impersonation which I found instantly endearing. The guitarist was rocking an Andre 3000 look with a wig cut into a bob style hair cut. Janelle came out a few minutes later, wide-eyed; brimming with spastic energy. She was a tiny girl with her hair fashioned into a big ol' pompadour atop her small frame. I think the pompadour was about the size of her whole head. You could almost sense how much fun she was about to have; staring into a crowd of working stiffs who probably came more for the free beer and pizza. But as she recited the introduction to her first song "Violet Stars Happy Hunting!" stating that she was " An alien from outer space, a cyber girl without a face.." everyone couldn't help but wait for her to really rip into it. I think it was then I fell for her. It doesn't hurt that she is a stone cold fox.

She proceeded to moon walk, dance into the crowd, and straight up put on a great show. I found it a bit odd that her songs tended to be over the 5 minute mark with no real big hooks. The songs were entirely entertaining but I feel that focusing her songs a bit more and shortening them would benefit her commercially. But as it is now ( Diddy just signed her along with Big Boi from Outkast acting as a producer as well) she is poised to be HUGE very soon.

I was trying to dissect her sound despite the fact that compartmentalizing artists really does take away from them as a whole. But ya know people like to be able to categorize things. It makes life easier most of the time. But you can definitely hear Outkast type beats ( makes sense seeing as the band is based out of Atlanta and she was originally signed by Big Boi's Purple Ribbon label), Afro-Punk, Hip Hop, Soul and vocal stylings that range from a Broadway type performance  to Gwen Stefani to traditional R&B/Soul. Oh yeah and remember to throw all of this and stick it into a time machine about a 100 year from now.

Don't know what the hell I'm talking about? Well listen to the songs below and have yourself a gander. She is playing the Viper Room tomorrow night which I hope to go to.

Oh did I mention she has a futuristic android alter-ego named Cindi Mayweather?

Here is a track from her newest album and a video of her singing " Killing Me Softly"

Someone's got a case of the Fridays....

Posted by Matthew in , ,

So it's Friday and I seem to be the only person in the office right now because I have to cover the boss man's phone and everyone is out to lunch. A cubicle can be a lonely place people. So in honor of the weekend being here and also because I happen to watch that movie "Diving Bell and The Butterfly" last night about the guy who is paralyzed from head to toe and has to communicate through blinking his one good eye....one blink means yes and two blinks means no... I am posting one of my favorite tracks from Jamie Lidell's latest album "Jim".

The paralyzed dude wanted to break out of his body and well.. I just want to get off of work...very tragic I know.

Meridian

So as part of my day job I am fortunate enough to come across some really cool design and graphic work sometimes. This is a cool little short film ( 2.5 minutes) from the creative director of a company called Digital Kitchen out in NY. It's pretty sweet.

Really nice composition, cool use of time lapse, and a nice little tune to nod your head to. It's a good way to fill 2.5 minutes of your day because we all know you've checked your Facebook page like 8 times already.

So I have been meaning to start a blog for a while and after using the phrase " I can always do it tomorrow" as a mantra for the last few months I have finally sucked it up...So as I slack at work/sit at home in my underwear you can enjoy the fruits of my labor..or non-labor I guess.
