My Band of the Year walking around Paris

Phoenix's  album "Wolfgang Amadeus " is probably my album of the year for 2009. I remember listening to it on a loop when I first got it. I think I listened to it for a solid two months again and again until I finally got a little weary of it.

It is just indie pop perfection. I think seeing them play live also cemented their place on top of all the bands that came out with records this year.

When Thomas Mars walked into the audience while singing the line from 1901 "Fallin', Fallin', Fallinnnnnnn!" I just about died.

Anyways here are some awesome videos I found from one of my favorite music sites. http://www.blogotheque.net/

This Guy Has A Band

If you thought you loved the movie "The Notebook" enough already, you were wrong. Because the dude who plays the rough around the edges, heart of gold lead can also write some pretty solid tunes. I heard Ryan Gosling DJ'd around LA before like most of those young hipster actors do nowadays. But I didn't know he had a band. The first thought that came to my head when my buddy told me about it was ..." I bet it's like some 30 Seconds to Mars turd sandwich". But to my surprise and delight his band "Dead Man's Bones" was quite solid and strangely spooky.

The "Intro" opens the record with a woman's haunting V/O talking about hearts in suitcases , last breaths and ultimately death. It sets the tone for a collection of songs that follow with related themes. There is a children's chorus that sings on a few of the tracks that I really like. It's like Children of the Corn but funner!

Even though I paint the album as sort of a downer , it is definitely not. Tracks like "Pa Pa Power" show you that Gosling can actually write some pretty catchy tunes. It has some slower moments but there are some real gems in here.
